World Mental Health Day (10 October) is a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma and to bring attention to the seriousness of mental illness and its major effects on peoples' lives worldwide. This year’s theme is of critical importance with its focus on suicide prevention. According to the World Health Organization, close to 800 000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds, with suicide being the second leading cause of death among adolescents ages 15-29 globally. Under this theme the World Health Organization is calling everyone to join in a “40 seconds of action” to raise awareness of the scale of suicide around the world and the role that each of us can play to help prevent it.
